Breathing for Weight Loss

There’s no denying that you’re intrigued by the concept of breathing for weight loss.  After all, it seems as though weight loss involves plenty of restrictive dieting, exercise and a boatload of self-control.  Could weight loss really be as simple as taking a few deep breaths?

Research would answer in the affirmative.  You see, metabolic processes are fueled by proper nutrition, exercise and oxygen-rich blood.  Given the latter option, it makes sense that the more oxygen that makes its way into the blood stream, the higher the metabolism will be – and that means the body will be burning more calories.

If this is the case, then why don’t we burn more calories just through normal breathing alone?  As it turns out, most individuals breath with their chests, which promotes a very shallow type of breathing (in fact, studies have shown that we only use 50% of our lung capacity with chest breathing).  Just think about it: at any given point in time, the average person is only using half of their lung capacity.  With this in mind, it stands to reason that learning how to breathe properly would double blood oxygen levels, thus giving the metabolism the kick-start it needs to start burning more calories.

So what kind of breathing for weight loss should you use?  Take a look at the techniques below to start harnessing the fat-burning power of your lungs:

  • To start breathing for weight loss, lay down on a firm surface with your back completely flattened to the floor.  Relax for a minute and start to concentrate on your breathing.  Notice how your chest rises and falls as you breathe.  Feel the air move through your lungs as you breathe in and out.  Once you get in tune with your breathing, take a deep breath through your nose and push out your stomach.  Keep pushing your belly up until you can’t expand it any longer, and then breathe out slowly through the mouth.  Notice how much more air you take in with this breathing technique?  That’s because you’re using your lung capacity to its full potential!
  • If you have a hard time breathing with your stomach, turn your breathing exercise into a challenge.  Place the palm of your hand on your chest and see if you can breathe in and out without moving your hand up and down.
  • Finally, don’t forget to breathe properly while exercising.  This might seem like a basic tip, but plenty of people tend to hold their breath while working out or engaging their core muscles.  Getting a shredded body involves inhaling and exhaling with the movements, as this accelerates your metabolism and enhances the overall impact of your workout.
